When shopping for new solid wood furniture, be it a bedroom, dining room, or just a coffee table, here are some questions to ask before you fall in love with the item. Finding the answers to these questions will help you make a wise, informed decision ensuring many years of problem free use.
- Where was this item made?
Be careful, the answer can lead to a misinformed judgement! Many products are made in Canada or the United States, but the materials used originated from Asia. This is less than ideal. Which leads us to question two…
- Where do the materials originate from?
Although many asian import wood types are indeed real wood, they’re not fit for North American climate changes throughout the year. Strange things can happen to these high moisture content tropical grown wood species.
- What species of wood is this?
If the wood is North American grown, it doesn’t really matter quality wise. Just be sure you like the grain type and any characteristics coming out in the wood. Of course, a hardwood is always recommended over softwoods.
- What construction methods were used to make this item?
Does the item contain english dovetailed joints, french dovetailed joints, tongue and groove, glued and screwed joints, mortise and tenon, dustproofed drawer compartments? How thick are the materials being used to make up the various parts of the item?
- What are my finish options?
Find out about all the stain options available. Do they offer painted finishes as well? Can they match the color to my existing pieces? Know your hardware options, many manufacturers offer handle, track, and hinge options.
- What is my warranty backing this product?
It’s always nice to have peace of mind just in case something should go wrong.
This pretty much sums up the most important questions to ask yourself or a salesperson when shopping for solid wood furniture. If the furniture “expert” you are dealing with cannot answer these questions, then I would suggest finding another dealer of the same or similar product.
